How to Choose a Barcode Scanner
1D or 2D scanning
Laser and linear imagers read 1D barcodes only. A 2D area imager reads 1D and 2D codes such as QR and Data Matrix, including codes on mobile phone screens.
Corded or cordless
Corded scanners are simple and never need charging. Cordless Bluetooth scanners let staff scan large or heavy items away from the counter. They suit stores and warehouses.
Handheld or hands-free
Handheld scanners suit general use. Presentation and omnidirectional scanners let cashiers pass items quickly without aiming. Fixed mount scanners read barcodes automatically on conveyors and production lines.
Environment and ruggedness
Retail and office scanners are built for light use. For warehouses, factories and cold storage, choose an ultra-rugged scanner with a higher drop and sealing rating and extended range if needed.
What is the difference between a 1D and a 2D barcode scanner?
A 1D scanner reads linear barcodes such as EAN and Code 128. A 2D scanner uses a camera-based imager and reads both linear barcodes and 2D codes such as QR codes and Data Matrix, including codes shown on a phone screen.
Can a barcode scanner read QR codes?
Only a 2D imager can read QR codes. Laser scanners and linear imagers read 1D barcodes only, so choose a 2D model if you need to scan QR codes, Data Matrix or codes on mobile screens.
Will a barcode scanner work with my billing or ERP software?
