Zone 1 ATEX/IECEx Scanner
A Zone 1 ATEX/IECEx scanner is an intrinsically safe barcode scanner or mobile device certified for use where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation. It is used in oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical and paint plants where standard devices could ignite the atmosphere.
A' Niche Solutions supplies Zone 1 rated devices, including the BCS 3600ex series handheld scanners that read 1D and 2D barcodes, as well as the MC27. We help match the device's certification to the zone classification of your site.

Match the zone classification
Zone 1 devices may be used in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. Confirm the hazardous area classification of your site before selecting a device.
Gas group and temperature class
Check that the device's gas group and temperature class on its marking cover the gases and vapours present at your site. Dust areas need a separate Zone 21 or 22 rating.
Accessories must be certified too
Batteries, chargers and cables are part of the certified system. Use only approved accessories inside the hazardous area and charge devices in a safe area.
Scanning needs
Beyond certification, choose the scan engine, range and form factor for the job, such as 1D or 2D reading and handheld scanner or mobile computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about buying Zone 1 ATEX/IECEx Scanner.
Ask Us a QuestionWhat is the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 2 ATEX scanners?
Zone 1 covers areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation. Zone 2 covers areas where it is unlikely and, if it occurs, lasts only a short time. A Zone 1 device can be used in Zone 2, but a Zone 2 device cannot be used in Zone 1.
What do ATEX and IECEx mean?
ATEX is the European framework for equipment used in explosive atmospheres. IECEx is the international certification scheme based on IEC standards. Both confirm that a device has been tested and marked for specific hazardous zones, gas groups and temperature classes.
Can I use a normal barcode scanner in a hazardous area?
No. A standard scanner or mobile computer can create sparks or hot surfaces that may ignite a flammable atmosphere. Only equipment certified for the zone classification of the area should be used there.
