How to Choose Labels and Ribbons
Label material
Paper labels suit cartons and short-life use. Polyester and other synthetic labels resist moisture, oil, abrasion and heat. They suit product, asset and outdoor labels.
Ribbon type
Wax ribbons print well on paper labels. Wax-resin gives better smudge and scratch resistance on coated paper and synthetics. Resin ribbons give the most durable print on polyester and other films.
Printer compatibility
Match the ribbon width, length, core size and ink side to your printer model. Label roll size and core diameter must also suit the printer's media holder.
Direct thermal labels
Direct thermal labels need no ribbon and are cost-effective for shipping labels and receipts, but they darken with heat and sunlight, so they are not suitable for long-term labelling.

Do direct thermal labels need a ribbon?
No. Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive coating that darkens under the printhead. They are simple and economical for shipping and short-life labels, but the print fades over time and with exposure to heat and light.
