About the DS8178 Handheld Scanner
The Zebra DS8178 is the cordless version of the DS8108 1D/2D imager. It connects over Bluetooth to a standard or presentation cradle and reads product barcodes, QR codes and codes on phone screens, including dimly lit displays. It suits supermarket checkouts, self-checkout lanes, store pickup counters, receiving and inventory work where the scanner has to reach items away from the counter.
Its main difference is power. It takes either a 2,500 mAh PowerPrecision+ battery, rated at 65,000 scans per full charge, or a PowerCap capacitor that is ready for 100 scans after 35 seconds in the cradle, and the two can be swapped on site. Virtual Tether alerts staff when the scanner leaves range or is left out of the cradle. The DS8108 is the corded version.

Should we choose the battery or the PowerCap for the DS8178?
The PowerPrecision+ battery suits scanners that stay out of the cradle for long periods. Zebra positions the PowerCap for scanners that go back into a charging cradle when not in use. The two can be swapped at any time.
What is the difference between the DS8178 and DS2278?
Both are cordless 1D/2D imagers. The DS8178 has a higher resolution 1,280 x 960 sensor, longer UPC range (61 cm against 36.8 cm), Digimarc support, a PowerCap option and Virtual Tether anti-loss alerts.
Can one DS8178 be moved between counters?
Yes. Scanner settings are stored in the AutoConfig cradle, so pairing the scanner to a different cradle configures it for that counter's application.
Will the DS8178 work with our POS software?
Yes. The cradle connects over USB, RS232, keyboard wedge or IBM 46XX, and in keyboard mode the scanned code is typed into the selected field. We can set it up with your software.
Do you provide repair and AMC for the DS8178?
Yes. We offer AMC and repair and service for barcode scanners, with PAN India support.
