About the Resin ribbon
A resin ribbon is the most durable type of thermal transfer ribbon. The resin ink bonds to polyester, polypropylene and other synthetic labels and resists chemicals, solvents, high temperatures, abrasion and outdoor exposure. It is used for asset tags, electronics and PCB labels, chemical drum labels, automotive part labels and any label that has to stay readable for years.
Resin needs more heat to print and costs more than the other ribbon types, so it is used where durability matters. Wax suits paper labels in clean indoor use, and wax-resin covers coated paper and matte synthetics with moderate exposure. For the full durability of a resin ribbon, pair it with a synthetic label such as polyester.

Do I need a resin ribbon for polyester labels?
For durable print on polyester, yes. Resin bonds to synthetic film and resists chemicals and abrasion. Wax-resin can work on some matte synthetics where exposure is moderate.
Can I use a resin ribbon on paper labels?
Resin ribbons are designed for synthetic and some topcoated labels. For paper labels a wax or wax-resin ribbon is the usual match.
Why is my resin print faint or patchy?
Resin ribbons need more heat than wax, so the print darkness or speed may need adjusting, and the label material must suit resin. A worn printhead or platen roller can also cause faint or patchy print. We repair printers and replace printheads and platen rollers.
How do I check the ribbon winding?
Press the sticky side of a label onto the outside of the ribbon roll. If ink transfers to the label, the ribbon is coated on the outside; if not, it is coated on the inside. Your printer manual states which winding it needs.
