About the WAX Ribbon
A wax ribbon is the standard thermal transfer ribbon for printing barcodes and text on paper labels. The printhead melts the wax ink onto the label, giving dark, sharp barcodes at high print speeds. It suits product, carton, shipping and retail labels that are used indoors and do not face chemicals or heavy abrasion.
Wax is the lowest cost of the three ribbon types. Wax-resin adds scratch and smear resistance on coated paper and matte synthetics, and resin is made for polyester and other synthetic labels that face chemicals, heat or outdoor conditions. If your labels smudge when handled, a wax-resin ribbon is usually the next step up.

Wax, wax-resin or resin: which ribbon do I need?
Use wax for paper labels used indoors. Use wax-resin when paper or matte synthetic labels need more resistance to scratching and smearing. Use resin for polyester and other synthetic labels that face chemicals, heat or outdoor exposure.
Can I use a wax ribbon on polyester labels?
It is not recommended. Wax ribbons are designed for paper labels. For synthetic labels Zebra recommends resin, or wax-resin for matte synthetics.
How do I know if my ribbon is ink side in or ink side out?
Press the sticky side of a label onto the outer surface of the ribbon roll and peel it off. If ink comes off onto the label, the ribbon is coated on the outside; if not, it is coated on the inside. Your printer manual states which winding it takes.
Which printers can use this ribbon?
Wax ribbons are used in thermal transfer printers from Zebra, TSC, Honeywell and others. The ribbon width, length, core size and winding must match your printer, so tell us the printer model.
