About the Direct thermal Label
Direct thermal labels are made from chemically treated, heat-sensitive paper that turns black where the printhead heats it. No ribbon is needed, which keeps printing simple and running costs low. They are widely used for courier and shipping labels, e-commerce dispatch, weighing scale labels and other labels that only need to last a short time.
The trade-off is durability. Zebra notes that direct thermal print has a shorter life, may fade over time and has minimal resistance to heat, light, abrasion and chemicals. For labels that must last longer, paper or polyester labels printed by thermal transfer with a wax, wax-resin or resin ribbon are the better fit.
Best For
- Courier and shipping labels
- E-commerce order and dispatch labels
- Weighing scale and short shelf-life food labels
- Temporary visitor, token and queue labels

What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer?
Direct thermal prints by heating a heat-sensitive label, with no ribbon. Thermal transfer uses a ribbon that melts ink onto the label, which lasts much longer and works on paper and synthetic materials such as polyester.
How long do direct thermal labels last?
They are meant for short-term use. The print can fade, and the label darkens when exposed to heat, sunlight or friction, so they are not suitable for asset tags or labels stored for long periods.
Can I use direct thermal labels in a thermal transfer printer?
Most thermal transfer printers can also print in direct thermal mode without a ribbon. A direct thermal only printer, however, cannot use thermal transfer labels. Check your printer settings or tell us the model and we will confirm.
Do direct thermal labels work for courier and e-commerce labels?
Yes. This is their most common use, since the label only needs to be read until the parcel is delivered.
How do I order direct thermal labels?
Tell us your label size, core size, quantity per roll and printer model and we will quote.
