About the Paper Labels
Paper labels are the everyday choice for barcode printing on desktop and industrial thermal printers. They are printed by thermal transfer with a ribbon, or come as direct thermal paper that needs no ribbon. They suit product, price, carton, shipping and inventory labels that stay indoors and do not face chemicals, moisture or heavy rubbing.
Compared with polyester labels, paper costs less and prints well at high speed with a wax ribbon, but it tears, absorbs moisture and has little resistance to chemicals or abrasion. For labels that must survive outdoors, in cold storage or on parts that get handled a lot, a polyester label with a resin ribbon is the safer choice. Direct thermal paper is covered on its own page.
Best For
- Product, MRP and price labels
- Carton and dispatch labels
- Warehouse and inventory labels used indoors
- Retail tags and general purpose labelling

Which ribbon should I use with paper labels?
For most paper labels a wax ribbon is enough. It prints sharp barcodes at high speed. If the labels get rubbed or handled a lot, a wax-resin ribbon gives better scratch and smear resistance on coated paper.
When should I choose polyester instead of paper?
Choose polyester when the label must resist moisture, chemicals, heat or abrasion, or has to last for years, for example asset tags, outdoor labels and labels on parts. Paper suits indoor labels with a short life.
What is the difference between paper labels and direct thermal labels?
Standard paper labels for thermal transfer are printed through a ribbon, and the print lasts longer. Direct thermal labels are coated with a heat-sensitive layer and need no ribbon, but the print fades and darkens with heat and light, so they suit short-life labels such as courier labels.
Will these labels work on my printer?
Paper labels work on standard thermal barcode printers from Zebra, TSC, Honeywell and others, as long as the roll size and core fit the printer. Tell us your printer model and we will confirm.
How do I order paper labels?
Tell us your label size, material, core size, number of labels and printer model and we will quote. We also supply the matching wax or wax-resin ribbons.
