About the RFD40 RFID Gun
The Zebra RFD40 is a UHF RFID sled that attaches to a Zebra mobile computer and turns it into a gun-style handheld RFID reader. It reads EPC Class 1 Gen 2 tags at more than 1,300 tags per second with a read range of up to 12 metres, which suits stock counts in retail stores, warehouses, hospitals and offices where items are tagged with RFID labels.
The RFD40 comes in three versions. The Standard sled connects to the mobile computer through Zebra's eConnex 8-pin connector or a USB-C cable. The Premium adds Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6 for remote management and can also pair with smartphones, and the Premium Plus adds an SE4100 1D/2D barcode imager so one trigger handles both RFID and barcodes. For fixed read points such as doorways, the FX7500 fixed reader with AN480 antennas is the alternative.
Best For
- Retail cycle counting and finding tagged items
- Warehouse and back-store inventory checks
- Hospital asset and specimen tracking
- Adding RFID to existing Zebra TC2x, TC5x and EC5x devices

Which Zebra mobile computers does the RFD40 work with?
Zebra's RFD40 accessory guide lists sled adaptors for the TC21/TC26, TC22/TC27, TC53/TC58, TC52ax, TC501 and EC50/EC55. The TC51/TC52/TC56/TC57 connect through a Bluetooth adaptor. Tell us which device you use and we will confirm the right sled and adaptor.
What is the difference between the RFD40 Standard, Premium and Premium Plus?
The Standard connects only through the eConnex connector or a USB-C cable. The Premium adds Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6 for over-the-air management and support for smartphones through an OtterBox uniVERSE adaptor. The Premium Plus has everything in the Premium plus a built-in SE4100 barcode imager.
Can the RFD40 work with a Windows PC?
Yes. Zebra lists Windows-based PCs as a supported host, connected through the USB-C cable or the USB cable cup, so the sled can be used as a tethered RFID reader.
Can the RFD40 be used with our own inventory software?
Yes. Zebra provides RFID SDKs for the RFD40 so your software team or vendor can build it into your app. We can help set it up with your software and supply the RFID tags and labels.
Do you provide service and AMC for RFD40 sleds?
Yes. We provide installation, setup with your software, repair and service and AMC, with PAN India support.
