About the MC9190-Z RFID Reader
The Zebra MC9190-Z is a gun-style handheld RFID reader built on Zebra's MC9190 mobile computer. It reads and writes UHF EPC Gen 2 tags at a nominal range of up to 9.14 m through an orientation-insensitive antenna, also scans barcodes and runs Windows Mobile 6.5. Zebra designed it for back room inventory, manufacturing floors, loading docks inside and outside, and asset tracking.
Zebra no longer sells the MC9190-Z. Its last sale date was 30 September 2019, and Zebra ended its own service and support on 30 December 2024. This page is mainly useful for teams still running MC9190-Z devices. For new projects, Zebra names the MC3390R as the replacement, and that model has since been followed by the MC3390xR. The RFD40 sled and TC22R on our site are other Zebra handheld RFID options.
Best For
- Teams already running MC9190-Z devices
- Back room and warehouse RFID stock counts
- Asset tracking on manufacturing floors
- RFID reads at loading docks, indoors and outdoors

Is the MC9190-Z still available from Zebra?
No. Zebra lists its last sale date as 30 September 2019 and its service and support discontinuation date as 30 December 2024. Zebra names the MC3390R as the replacement, which has since been followed by the MC3390xR. Contact us to discuss your existing devices or a current model.
Can you look at our existing MC9190-Z devices?
We offer repair and service for handheld devices. Since Zebra's own support has ended, send us the model and the fault and we will tell you what can be done.
Does the MC9190-Z read barcodes as well as RFID tags?
Yes. Depending on the configuration it has a 1D laser, a 1D extended range engine, a 2D imager or a DPM imager for marks on metal, plastic and glass.
Will our current app run on the MC9190-Z?
It runs Windows Mobile 6.5, so it runs apps written for Windows Mobile, not Android apps. Teams moving to Android usually change to a current model such as the TC22R, and we can set up the new devices with your software.
