About the Newland FR40 Koi
The Newland FR40 Koi is a corded hands-free presentation scanner with a megapixel camera and a 1280 x 800 CMOS sensor. It stands on the counter and reads 1D barcodes and 2D codes such as QR Code, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec. Newland positions it for retail and pharmacy POS and ticket checking, so it suits billing counters, chemists, ticket checking points and service desks where customers show codes on a phone.
A switch toggles the scanner between paper and screen modes, and an infrared sensor starts the scan as soon as a code is presented. Its soft white illumination is angled at 10°, which Newland says keeps it comfortable for customers and staff. It handles motion up to 2.5 m/s and is sealed to IP52. Compared with handheld scanners such as the Newland HR32, the FR40 is meant to stay on the counter so both hands stay free.

Can the FR40 Koi read QR codes from a mobile screen?
Yes. It reads 1D and 2D codes, and it has a switch to change between paper mode and screen mode for codes shown on a phone.
Does the cashier need to press a button to scan?
No. The FR40 has an infrared trigger that detects the item or phone as it is presented and starts scanning.
Will the FR40 Koi work with our billing software?
It connects over USB or RS-232, and its settings can be changed with Newland's EasySet configuration tool. We handle the setup with your billing or ticketing software.
Should we choose a presentation scanner or a handheld?
A presentation scanner such as the FR40 suits counters where items and phones are brought to the scanner. If staff need to scan heavy items in a trolley or cartons away from the counter, a handheld such as the Newland HR32 suits better.
